Vera Zvonareva : US Open runner-up

Kim Clijsters (BEL) [2] v. Vera Zvonareva (RUS) [7]

For the second consecutive major championship this summer Vera Zvonareva
played in a Grand Slam final. At Wimbledon her opponent was the defending champion Serena Williams. At US Open she played against the defending champion Kim Clijsters.

Vera has defied expectations before, particularly taking out last year's finalist and this year's top-seeded player, Caroline Wozniacki. The Great Caro's dismissal was a big surprise, altough Vera prooved she had the weapons to eliminate the young Dane.

The big day of the final. The two players come on the court and take a picture with the big names Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. They both smile and seem relaxed. Good thing for Kim, not that good for Vera. It was a short match, finished with a quick 6-2 6-1 by Clijsters, a match with a slow Zvonareva, who had only some flashes of her semifinal game.

"With Kim, you have to be fast. You have to play fast. You have to move quick. I was just overall very slow," Zvonareva said. "I think Kim played a really good match and she did not give me chances to get into the match. She deserved to win."

"Nine years ago, the world changed for everybody," Clijsters said. "It was an honor to play here today and maybe I gave you all a bit of a distraction."
