Kudryavtseva wins Russian battle in Tashkent

Tashkent, September 25: 7th seeded and world ranked 103rd player Alla Kudryavtseva outplayed 4th seeded and 72nd ranked Elena Vesnina in an all Russian final to lift the singles title at Tashkent Open.

Kudryavtseva, the runner-up at Gunagzhou , made it to a second final and beat better ranked Vesnina, 6-4 6-4 in 1 hour 34 minutes to become the first Russian player to win the title here in the last 12 years of the existence of the event . It was also her first WTA career title.

"I was a nervous for sure. I did not expect to win. It was high pressure situation.” Alla said. “The score line looked as if it was an easy final, but out there it wasn’t. The first was closed out with just one break but the second we both broke each other and was not getting easy at all. «My serve helped me more than anything else. I got it in big and it helped me.”

Being asked about her future events, Alla said: “Looking forward I don’t want to be carried away. I would like to have moderate expectations.”

When told that no winner of Tashkent Open has been back here to defend her title, Alla said “Yes I will return to defend my title, I would prefer to go to a place where I feel at home. Here in Tashkent there are many who speak Russian and I feel at home here. Moreover, one must go back to tournaments where you win as one feels good and it gets back the happy memories of the past year. So even if I could be ranked higher next year, I will return to defend my title.”

The dejected No.4 seed Elena Vesnina who looked in great form till the finals today said “I did not play as well as I played in the whole week, I congratulate Alla on winning her first title on the tour. I surely need to work hard on my game and strokes. But Alla played amazing tennis.”

The winner Kudryavtseva pocketed $37,000 and earned 280 WTA points, while the runner-up Vesnina took home $19,000 and 200 WTA points apart from the trade mark traditional gold embroidered Uzbek costume.

Panova/ Poutchek win doubles title at Tashkent open

Unseeded Alexandra Panova of Russia and Belarusian Tatiana Poutchek bagged their maiden WTA Doubles title by lifting the Tashkent Open. At the Olympic Tennis Centre, Panova and Tatiana pushed aside the challenge of top seeded Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru and Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 6-4 in 1 hour 6 minutes. The winning pair Panova and Poutchek were teaming up for the second time at a WTA-level event after beginning their association by reaching the semifinals at Istanbul.

“It is so incredible. So special,” exclaimed Panova after claiming her first WTA title of any kind. “I conveyed the message to my coach as I am travelling with my father,” who according to Panova “is lucky getting good results.” “We will try to play more. And we will keep the partnership going as long as the results keep coming,” Panova added.

Panova and Poutchek picked up the top prize of $11,000 and pocketed 280 WTA points, while Dulgheru/ Rybarikova earned $5,750 and added 200 WTA points.

Juan Ignacio Chela, king of clay in Bucharest

After three fun days, with four fun exhibition matches, it was time to go back to serious business at BCR Open. On Saturday, the red clay of the Center Court was waiting the four 2010 doubles finalists, Marcel Granollers (ESP), Santiago Ventura (ESP), Lukasz Kubot (POL) and Juan Ignacio Chela (ARG).

After Marcel's difficult singles semifinal against Pablo Andujar, everybody expected he will be tired and will not be able to play at his normal level in doubles. And he was not. But, with Ventura's help, he took a set and fought like a warrior in the decisive. But the luck was on Kubot and Chela's side. They won, 6-2 5-7 13-11. This was Chela's third doubles title, after Estoril and Vina del Mar, in 2004, respectively 2005.

But the 31-year-old's Romanian adventure didn't finish here. Today he won his tenth singles final and the second this year, against the qualifier Pablo Andujar, 7-5 6-1. The first set was a good one for the Spaniard. Chela broke his serve twice, but each time he came back immediately. At 6-5, the South-American was able to finish it, by breaking the younger player's serve. In the second set, he had a total control, winning it easily, with 6-1.

It was Chela's 5th title after Mexico City (2000), Amersfoort (2002), Estoril (2004), Acapulco (2007) and Houston (2010).

The winner Juan Igancio Chela earned 250 ATP points and picked up the prize of €66.580, while Andujar added 150 ATP points and took home €34.975.

Oldies but goldies!

Last night, the BNR Arenas have hosted a memorable doubles exhibition, between four true legends, Ilie Nastase, Mansour Bahrami, Henri Leconte and Mats Wilander.

Thousands of people, tennis fans or not, waited hours to enter at this fabulous match. And they were not disappointed. The first world no.1 in history, "Nasty", teamed up with another former world no.1, the still-young Mats Wilander, who, at the age of 46, was the youngest and the fittest between the four tennis musketeers. On the other side of the court, the doubles experts Bahrami and Leconte played whatever they wanted, creating very spectacular shots in every position.

Of course, there were a lot of fun enertaining moments. Leconte and Bahrami tried to learn Romanian, by imitating the chair umpire, called Nastase "grandpa" all the match and Leconte prooved he could always be the voice of a cartoon character, by making funny voices and laughs.

Romania's big friend, Mansour Bahrami, has already a lot of fans here. He was supported by a group of Iranian fans and by all the people on the BNR Arena, who appreciated his many "magic" numbers.

The score was not important anymore. The scoreboard entered in their funny game, showing more than 40 points played in the tie-break, trying to break Isner and Mahut's record from Wimbledon.

Tonight, another exhibition match at BCR Open, between Henri Leconte and Mats Wilander, a 'replay' of the 1988 French Open final!

2011 Davis Cup Draw is out!

The 2010 Davis Cup is not even over, but the 2011 draw is out! Waiting for the Serbia-France final from Belgrade, here are the World Group first round matches.

Starting with one of the countries my blog is about...

Romania - Argentina

After a perfect win from Romania in the play-off and a perfect... loss from Argentina in the World Group semifinals, the two teams will meet in next year's first round. Not the easiest tie for Romania, but totally not the worst. The two nations played against each other only once, but with a totally different generation of players, in the 1981 World Group quarterfinals, when Florin Segarceanu and Andrei Dirzu competed for Romania and Jose-Luis Clerc, Ricardo Cano and the big champion Guillermo Vilas for Argentina. The South-Americans won with a close score, 3-2.

Russia - Sweden

Soderling's Sweden will face the seventh seeded team, Russia. Russia has the first chance, although Sweden won four of the five matches the two teams played against each other since 1975. Anyway, the East-Europeans won the last tie, in 2002, when Marat Safin and Yevgeny Kafelnikov where the two heroes, bringing Russia three of their four winner rubbers.

Here you have the full Davis Cup draw.

Serbia (s) (c) v. India
Russia (s) v. Sweden (c)
Czech Republic (s) (c) (*) v. Kazakhstan
Argentina (s) (c) v. Romania
Chile (c) v. USA (s)
Belgium (c) v. Spain (s)
Germany v. Croatia (s) (c)
Austria (c) v. France (s)
______________________________________________________________

Key

(s) = seeded nation
(c) = choice of ground
(*) = choice of ground decided by lot

A Diary : Davis Cup -> Romania-Ecuador

Hello, guys! :) I'm coming after three amazing days! Bucharest was the host of the Romania-Ecuador tie, in the Davis Cup play-offs. It was a very hot weekend, even for us, in the stands. I don't want to think how were the players feeling in that giant oven.

In the first day, we arrived in Bucharest, at my aunt's house and went to the National Tennis Centre. In the first match, everything was in Victor's favour, and it finished with a dominant 6-2 6-2 6-2.

In the break, I caught Marius Copil going out from the TVR studio and I took an autograph and a photo. I have to say it, he's sooo cute! Blond, suntanned, with beautiful eyes... :)

OK, I will stop dreaming now! :) The second match was very impressive, especially from Adi Ungur. He was able to comeback from 0-2, at 31 degrees.

Saturday was a cool day. I couldn't wait for the doubles match. I was really sorry to hear that Nicolas was not fully recovered, so he wasn't able to play alongside his younger brother Giovanni, but I was happy to see Ivan for another day.

When I arrived at the National Tennis Centre, I've seen Ivan and Giovanni practicing on the Centre Court - shirtless! :)

So, this match has decided Romania's situation, as Horia and Victor won, 6-2 6-2 6-2. Here I've seen a very touching moment, from Ecuador's team. A sad Ivan, close to burst into tears and a more experienced Giovanni comforting him, with a smile on his face. It was really sweet.

After the match, I took photos with some of the Romanian players and went to see the feudal outfits parade.

In the third day I went at the NTC a little earlier than before, hoping to find someone else practicing shirtless, but it was cold and windy. But, on another tennis court, I've seen Giova, Emilio and the captain. Of course, photos and everything...:)

And a photo with Nico, after a short conversation about water. Haha!

In the first match, you could've seen on Giovanni's face and body how exhausted he was, in front of a fresh Crivoi.

On the other hand, Emilio's debut was not that bad, as the 18-year-old broke Adi's serve and lead with 3-0 in the second set. Here, the bigger experience and the better ranking was obvious. Ungur won, 6-3 6-4.

This was my perfect weekend in pictures. I hope you enjoyed it and didn't get bored! :)

Romania, back to the World Group

Romania went into this weekend's Davis Cup play-off with Ecuador, as firm favourites after the visitors revealed their highest-ranked and the most experienced player, Nicolas Lapentti, will be forced to miss this weekend's singles. Despite the former top ten player's ongoing battle to recover after a knee injury, he arrived in the Romanian capital Bucharest, hopeful that he could play at least the doubles match, alongside his younger brother Giovanni. Even with Lapentti senior fit, the Romanians could have been confident of ending the weekend triumphant, but without him, Andrei Pavel's squad was very confident about their chances of securing World Group in 2011.

Romania's no.2 Adrian Ungur was the hero of the first day when he battled to victory from two sets down in the second rubber of the day to give the hosts a commanding 2-0 overnight lead. The home nation’s No. 1 Victor Hanescu had put Andrei Pavel’s team in control with a one-sided 62 62 62 victory over Ivan Endara. But while Lapentti, who had been promoted to lead his team when older brother Nicolas ruled himself unfit for the singles, began to tire in the third set, Ungur went from strength to strength to notch up a gutsy 67(2) 46 63 64 61 win – his first Davis Cup by BNP Paribas victory in only the second rubber of his career. The 25-year-old’s recovery was all the more remarkable given the match was played in temperatures reaching 31 degrees Celsius in Bucharest and on an energy-sapping, relatively slow red clay surface, purpose-built for the tie.

“At the beginning I thought I wasn’t going to win,” Ungur admitted. “I was down, but the crowd were behind me and I’m very happy. My captain was telling me I needed to move him around some more and make him play a lot [of balls]. I felt he was getting tired so I said, “OK, let’s [make him] run a little bit to see how he’s feeling.’ This victory will give me a lot of confidence.”

“I was very happy with the way I served,” Hanescu said afterwards. “I used the kick serve a lot which was good as he’s a short guy and I had a very good percentage on first serve. It was a very good match for me. I’m happy I didn’t spend too much time on court.”

After the second day, Andrei Pavel could start planning for the World Group in 2011 after his doubles team Victor Hanescu and Horia Tecau put their nation into an unbeatable 3-0 lead. The home team combined superbly in front of a noisy crowd at the National Centre of Tennis to completely outclass the visitors’ first-time pairing of Giovanni Lapentti and Ivan Endara, 6-2 6-2 6-2. Any pairing would have been tested by the likes of Hanescu and Tecau on the day, the latter having won five ATP doubles titles this year, with a ranking of No.18 in the world as well as a recent runners-up spot at Wimbledon alongside Sweden’s Robert Lindstedt. But when Ecuador’s most experienced player, Nicolas Lapentti, decided his problematic knee would rule him out of day two’s action it was always going to be a tall order for the younger Lapentti brother and Endara, who was playing only his second Davis Cup doubles rubber.

In the third day, Romania's dominant team completed a clean sweep of all five rubbers with another two singles victories in their World Group play-off against Ecuador in Bucharest on Sunday, to wrap up a perfect weekend for captain Andrei Pavel and his men. The result means Romania will re-join the 16-nation World Group for the 14th time in Davis Cup's history. With the tie already decided by Saturday night, Pavel brought in world No.183 Crivoi to take on Ecuador’s No.1 Giovanni Lapentti in the first of Sunday’s singles and the local had too much energy for the South American during a relatively straightforward 62 64 victory. Later on, Ungur won his second rubber of the weekend when he scored a 63 64 victory over Emilio Gomez, the son of 1990 French Open champion Andres, on the 18-year-old’s Davis Cup debut.

“I’m so happy,” said Pavel, reflecting on the tie. “I was thinking about when I first started as captain. I had a loss against Russia and then a defeat against Sweden. There was a lot of stress in those first ties. We were a little lucky with Nicolas Lapentti injured this weekend and with a player like Victor Hanescu leading the team it was pretty easy in the end. It was perfect."

“World Group tennis is very important for us. Davis Cup is huge. Spectators will come and watch and if we’re at home against a big team it will be very good for Romania and very good for tennis in this country.”

Viver admitted his team had always been underdogs. “The rankings made Romania favourites before the tie and I think the results proved that,” he said. “Even with Nicolas healthy it would have been a tough series but we would have had a better chance.”

Lapentti senior had to endure a frustrating weekend, watching helpless from the bench as his nation slipped to defeat, but although the 34-year-old hasn’t played since the French Open in May he insisted he will do everything he can to ensure he wears his country’s colours again one day.

“I don’t want to finish [my Davis Cup career] like this,” the former world No.6 said. “Once I recover I want to see if I have the motivation to compete on the tour and if that’s not the case I will probably leave the door open to be part of the Davis Cup.” After a difficult weekend for team Ecuador it will be music to his captain’s ears.

A Diary : ATP players

Hello, guys! It has been a very interesting men's US Open, isn't that? And this is the reason that I've decided to share with you my Top 5 ATP players.

5. Rafael Nadal (ESP) - And I think I said everything with that. At this US Open, he played really unbelieveable and it's clear he deserved to win. He became the youngest player to win every single major, at the age of 24. He already won 9 Grand Slam titles and I think he has a big chance to beat Federer's record, because if his knees are fine, he will have a long grandiose career.

4. Andy Roddick (USA) - Love him or hate him. He will always be a big name in tennis, altough he won only one Grand Slam title. He and Federer are the only players to have been ranked top 10 from 2002 through 2009 consecutively. He has an impressive game and in a good day he can beat anyone. He's a former world no.1 and he remains in my mind especially for the amazing 2009 Wimbledon final. I will never forget it.

3. Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) - He impressed me last year at US Open, first for winning his SF and apologizing for ruining the dream final Federer-Nadal, and then for beating Roger in the final. He is very young and I am really sorry for his injury, I can't wait to see him back!

2. Robin Soderling (SWE) - I know what most of the people think : "Woo, bad boy". Yes, he had some episodes in his career when he was kind of a bad boy (most known for his 'problem' with Nadal or, recently, the umpire Pascal Maria). And for a reason, in a Nadal-Soderling match I will always support him, altough I know what he did a few years ago was not nice. He's the only player to beat Rafa at Roland Garros (2009), and this year he beat Federer, reaching the second consecutive final. And, c'mon, guys, let's be serious : he has the best smile!!! :)

1. Novak Djokovic (SRB) - Should I talk about his game or his off-court life? On the court he can be very dangerous, he is a perfectionist, which, in most cases, is a very good thing. Off the court he has everything. A cool family, a lovely girlfriend, very good friends, and which is more, an amazing sense of humor. Everybody knows his impersonations and his jokes. In conclusion, a complete person, which means a lot.

And, a guy who will always have a special place in my tennis heart...

... Marat Safin (RUS) !!!

To be honest, I've never heard someone to say he doesn't like him. He is so charismatic, that people just LOVE seeing him arguing with the umpires or smashing racquets. And this is not ordinary.

That's it. Talk to you next time! :)

Vera Zvonareva : US Open runner-up

Kim Clijsters (BEL) [2] v. Vera Zvonareva (RUS) [7]

For the second consecutive major championship this summer Vera Zvonareva
played in a Grand Slam final. At Wimbledon her opponent was the defending champion Serena Williams. At US Open she played against the defending champion Kim Clijsters.

Vera has defied expectations before, particularly taking out last year's finalist and this year's top-seeded player, Caroline Wozniacki. The Great Caro's dismissal was a big surprise, altough Vera prooved she had the weapons to eliminate the young Dane.

The big day of the final. The two players come on the court and take a picture with the big names Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. They both smile and seem relaxed. Good thing for Kim, not that good for Vera. It was a short match, finished with a quick 6-2 6-1 by Clijsters, a match with a slow Zvonareva, who had only some flashes of her semifinal game.

"With Kim, you have to be fast. You have to play fast. You have to move quick. I was just overall very slow," Zvonareva said. "I think Kim played a really good match and she did not give me chances to get into the match. She deserved to win."

"Nine years ago, the world changed for everybody," Clijsters said. "It was an honor to play here today and maybe I gave you all a bit of a distraction."

Mikhail Youzhny, second USO semifinal

A lot of people from the US Open crowd remember the day of September 11th. 9 years after the tragedy, on Arthur Ashe Stadium, tennis scheduled two intense plays, full of emotions, pain or smiles : the men's semifinals.

In the first match, Rafael Nadal faced a big warrior from Russia, Mikhail Youzhny. Without loosing a set, Nadal stepped on the court with a huge ambition, trying to reach his first US Open final. The first set didn't seem a Grand Slam semifinal set, after the Nadal won it, 6-2. The only interesting moment of the first set was the fifth game, when Youzhny fought like a few years ago. After this set, the Russian realized he has to change something. And he did. He made some great points, trying to upset the world no.1. Despite his visible efforts, the Spaniard took the second set, 6-3. The third set started perfectly for Rafa, when he broke the opponent's service at 1-1, but Mikhail broke back. Right after that, at 4-4, the top seed made another break. Nadal was serving for the match. Nothing easier. The set finished 6-4 and the match seemed only a tennis lesson teached by Rafa. But for Misha, it's still a good sign, being in a Grand Slam semifinal and maybe being able to make the finals, when he doesn't need to face the best shape of Rafael Nadal.

Nadal will face next Novak Djokovic. An impressive Novak Djokovic, who beat Roger Federer for the first time at US Open. But, in the same time, a tired Nole, who stayed way longer on the court than Rafa.

The final is scheduled second on Arthur Ashe Stadium, not before 4:30 PM (local time).

A Diary : WTA players

Hello, guys! :) Today I was reading some websites and blogs and I saw everything is about the personal opinion. And I thought: "Well, most of my articles are news. Should I do something?". So I decided to share with you my opinions, my preferences etc.

So in this very first diary page, I want to present to you my Top 5 WTA Players.

5. Alexandra Dulgheru (ROU) - Alex is good at everything. In tennis, she appeared from nowhere last year in Warsaw. Then she repeated the performance this year, defending Top 10 players or former Top 10 players. Off the court, she has a big talent in painting and acting. She's really an amazing girl.

4. Kim Clijsters (BEL) - Champion, on and off the court. When you say Clijsters, you don't need to say nothing more. Her talent is undoubted. She is a former world no.1 in singles and doubles, she won 2 Grand Slam titles and played another 3 finals. And the most impressive thing is that she won her second US Open title, in only her third tournament back. Off the court, she has no reason to not be happy, she has an amazing husband and Jada is the most beautiful kid I've ever seen.

3. Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) - Bad girl. Only on the court. She is friendly, she is funny and she plays football like no other player. :) Talking about her tennis, it's really impressing how she has adapted her game to all surfaces. She has a strong serve, a heavy forehand and she is capable of very spectacular shots. She won 2 Grand Slam titles and other 10 WTA titles. She is a former world no.2, but I know she can be no.1 one day.

2. Jelena Jankovic (SRB) - Altough she has never won a Grand Slam singles title, she is one of the toughest and fittest players on the tour. She won the mixed doubles competition at Wimbledon, with her partner, Jamie Murray. JJ is popular, she appeared in a lot of commercial, she became an UNICEF ambassador and she was the subject of an autobiographical documentary, Jelenin svet (Jelena's life). And everything because she is a pretty, funny and nice person.

1. Dinara Safina (RUS) - I have to admit, first I liked her just because she was Marat's sister. But then I started to like her for what she is, as a person and as a tennis player. She is the only player, male or female, I'm supporting no matter where, no matter against who is she playing. She won the US Open doubles title, and played 3 Grand Slam singles finals. Former world no.1. Now I'm just waiting to see her playing like before and, maybe, winning a Grand Slam singles title.

So, they are my favourites. Talk to you next time, via another "A Diary" article. :)
